چکیده

Image processing has traditionally involved the use of square operators on regular rectangular image lattices. For many years the concept of using hexagonal pixels for image capture has been investigated, and several advantages of such an approach have been highlighted. We present a design procedure for hexagonal gradient operators, developed within the finite element framework, for use on hexagonal pixel based images. In order to evaluate the approach, we generate pseudo hexagonal images via resizing and resampling of rectangular images. This approach also allows us to present results visually without the use of hexagonal lattice capture or display hardware. We provide comparative results with existing gradient operators, both rectangular and hexagonal. 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Design of Feature Extraction Operators for Use on Biologically Motivated Hexagonal Image Structures

For many years the concept of using hexagonal pixels for image capture has been investigated, and several advantages of such an approach have been highlighted. Recently there has been a renewed interest in the use of hexagonal images: biologically inspired approaches, representation of architectures for such images and general hexagonal image processing. We present multiscale hexagonal gradient...

Directional Morphological Gradient Edge Detector

In this thesis, the limitations of the conventional morphological gradient (MG) as an edge detector are theoretically analyzed, and three new methods with improved performance are developed. The new methods are analyzed theoretically and demonstrated with both synthetic and real image data. The basic issues regarding edge detection, linear and nonlinear filtering, especially in morphological fi...

Design of Multi-Dimensional Derivative Filters

Many multi-dimensional signal processing problems require the computation of signal gradients or directional derivatives. Traditional derivative estimates based on adjacent or central differences are often inappropriate for multi-dimensional problems. As replacements for these traditional operators, we design a set of matched pairs of derivative filters and lowpass prefilters. We demonstrate th...

A Comparison Between Square and Hexagonal Sampling Methods for Pipeline Image Processing

The majority of machine vision systems derive their input data by digitising an image to produce a square grid of sampled points. However, other sampling techniques can represent equal picture information in a smaller number of samples, with a consequent reduction in data rate. Several workers have looked at regular hexagonal sampling of images which produces optimum data rates for a given info...
